We recently took a trip to Dinosaur World in Cave City, KY to check out the over 150 dinosaurs across over 20 acres, Dinosaur World also has locations in Texas and Florida. The drive for us was right at 1 1/2 hours from right outside of Nashville, a nice little trip and not so long that they kids ask “Are we there yet?” a hundred times.
When you arrive at the park you are greeted by this huge entrance and on the other side of the wall is a map of the park.
Below is the entrance to the gift shop/admission area and a great place for a photo.
There are many things to see and do at the park, so we decided to start off walking the path to view the dinosaurs. The paved path winds through lush greenery where you can see the dinosaurs placed as they would have been in their natural environment. each dinosaur has a plaque posted nearby with many details from it size, to eating habits to locations where fossils have been located.
Some of these guys are pretty creepy, that one on the top left looks like he is ready for lunch.
Photosaurus pictured below is a fictional dinosaur created for Dinosaur World, it s 40 feet high and weighs 3,500 pounds! This massive dinosaur can be seen from I-65 as you approach the exit for Dinosaur World.
It was in the mid 90’s on the day we visited Dinosaur World so after walking around and looking at the dinosaurs for over an hour the cool shade of the movie theater was awesome. Sit down, relax and cool off whole you learn even more about the dinosaurs.
After you are finished looking at the dinosaurs and watching the movie, there are plenty of activities to do, let the little ones play on the playground or grab a once in a lifetime photo opp of your child with their head in a dinosaurs mouth!
There is an air conditioned museum that is also a great area to cool off in while viewing different fossils, a lot of them discovered here in the US.
The fossil dig was pretty cool. The kids got to sift through the sand to find different fossils and then choose three to keep. I believe the Dino Gems was the kids favorite activity. You buy a gem bag, available in multiple sizes and grab your screen and head over to the stream. Pour in half of the contents of the gem bag into the screen and place it down in the stream and give it a little shake for the sediment to wash away. In the end you are left with many different varieties of gems that can be identified at the Assay Station nearby.
The boneyard in the top left picture gives the kids some free time to pretend they are paleontologists and sift through the sand and use brushes as paleontologists would to gently uncover what is below. There is a set of bleachers in this area for other family members to cool off and relax while the kids play. There is no food served at the park so if you plan to be at the park during lunch, you may want to bring a sack lunch and enjoy it at one of the many picnic tables.
After you are done seeing all of the dinosaurs and participating in the various activities, head back in to the gift shop for a souvenir or two. The gift shop has something for all ages, my oldest daughter got a tie dyed Dinosaur World T-Shirt, my youngest daughter found a gem necklace that she loved and of course my son found a Dinosaur figure that he could not do without.
We really enjoyed our trip to Dinosaur World and it was both a fun and learning experience and The Caraway Family would like to thank Dinosaur World for inviting us out for a day of fun in the sun. If you are a homeschooling family like we are you can visit Dinosaur World for fun and check off a day of school while learning about fossils and dinosaurs. While in the area we also visited the Mammoth Cave National Park which was beautiful. On the way up to the park be sure to pull off by the sign and snap and photo and also check out the Sand Cave Trail and read about the story of Floyd Collins, a celebrated pioneer cave explorer who died in Sand Cave after dislodging a rock from the ceiling, pinning his leg and trapping him in the cave. While visiting Cave City, KY we stayed at the Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp – Resort which is only minutes away from both Dinosaur World and Mammoth Cave National Park. The Jellystone Resort has everything from primitive campsites to RV hookups to cabins, plus your stay includes use of the 2 pools, splash pad, 300 foot water slide, Jump pillow, nightly movies at the Pavilion, miniature golf and more.
