If you have been following my blog for very long at all, you know that we have been making the change to eating foods that are organic, Non-GMO and not processed and I also believe in feeding our pets just as well. I recently came across the Open Farm Healthy Pet Food brand and reached out to them to see of our Pups could give it a try. First a little background on Open Farm. It is a family run business that knows that the best ingredients are grown by farmers who respect their land and the animals under their care. The farm-to-bowl supply chain is certified by third party organizations specializing in humane animal care and sustainable farming practices to give you piece of mind. Meat and Poultry used by Open Farm is 100% certified by the Humane Farm Animal Care Program, all fish is free of antibiotics and artificial feeds and comes from sustainable oceans. Almost 40% of vegetables used in Open Farm Pet Foods are grown in the same town as their manufacturing facility. If they cannot source produce from the local town, they look for the next best option – and in total, approximately 90% of their fruits and vegetables are grown locally, either in-state or in a neighboring states.
Open Farm Pet Food is currently available in three varieties, Homestead Turkey & Chicken Recipe (pictured above), Catch of the Day Whitefish and Green Lentil and Farmer’s Market Pork & Root Vegetable Recipe. When I shop for food for Nala and Xena, the first thing I look at is the list of ingredients, same as I do for my family. The list of ingredients for the Homestead Turkey & Chicken Recipe begins with Humanely farmed turkey, humanely farmed chicken, ocean caught whitefish meal, russet potatoes, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), green lentils, field peas, coconut oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), ocean caught menhaden fish meal, tomato, apples, pumpkin, natural flavor, flaxseed, sun cured alfalfa, carrots, chicory root, salmon oil. I am pretty sure you recognize all of those ingredients and have probably eaten several of them yourself many times.
One thing I loved as Mommy to the Pups is that both can eat from the same bag. Xena the Bulldog/Mastiff mix on the right above is only 8 months old although she does not look like it, so technically she is still a puppy. Nala, our 5 year old Shetland Sheepdog pictured on the left is an adult and approaching her senior years. Normally I would buy a bag of puppy food for Xena and another bag of Adult recipe for Nala, but with Open Farm they can both eat from the same bag. Xena is still losing teeth so she likes a food that is easy to eat and the size of the Open Farm Pet Food was great, she did not have a hard time with it at all. Nala has started having a sensitive stomach over the last year or so, the size of the Open Farm Pet food makes it easier for her to digest, that plus top quality ingredients, I am happy to say that neither Pup had any kind of stomach or bowel issues while they were eating the Open Farm Pet Food and they absolutely loved to eat it.
