If you watch Shark Tank you may have seen this product on the show last year. My husband is a big fan of Shark Tank, has seen every episode and when we were offered the opportunity to try one of their products of course we were ecstatic. The idea behind Roominate is to get girls to think creatively, problem solve and learn to build things. The two founders of Roominate, Alice Brooks and Bettina Chen met and became friends in the master’s engineering program at Stanford. While they were pursuing their engineering program they realized just how few women were there. In the US, less than 15% of women enter college intending to major in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) field. Alice and Bettina believe the gender gap starts young. Many girls’ toys lag behind in the development of spatial skills, hands-on problem solving skills, and confidence with technology. These are exactly the skills that Roominate aims to develop.
Roominate products are available in several kits, the one we received is the Studio which comes with 70 pieces and includes:
- 4 wall/floor panels
- 24 furniture building pieces
- 16 connectors
- 1 motor
- 1 switch
- 1 battery pack
- 1 screwdriver
- 1 doll
- 1 pet
- 20 sheets of craft paper
- Paper cutouts
Use these pieces to create bunk beds, tables, laptop desks, cupcake stands, slides, and more! What makes Roominate unique is your child can make their creation come to life! Wire up the motor circuit to make spinning windmills, carousels, and elevators! Roominate kits are designed to work together so your child can continue to expand their Roominate world, fostering creativity, problem solving, design and encoraging open ended play. My 10 year old daughter, Phoebe loved the many different things she could do and build with this kit. Instead of just giving her a house and some furniture to put in it, she built the house and furniture herself, plus it was her first experience with wiring and seeing how battery packs and switches work.
Roominate was named the #1 toy by Time Magazine in 2014 and are available at Toys ‘R Us, Amazon, Radio Shack, Walmart and many other places. This Christmas give that special girl in your life the gift of creativity and imagination and maybe you can fuel their dreams to be the next great engineer, you never know.
