Figuring out a fair system for them to earn their own money by helping out around the house

My daughter is not-quite two years old, so we haven’t really crossed this bridge yet. I think the biggest hurdle I foresee is savings. We have struggled financially for all seven years of our marriage thus far, and in order to avoid using credit, we live on the very edge, and never have anything left to set aside for the future. I want my daughter to have a solid understanding of savings, so it will be interesting figuring that out if we’re still strapped when she’s a little older.

My kids earn money by chores – each chore pays $2.00 – they can earn $10 a week. This needs to go towards anything”extra” (mall, movies, etc) they still think that money grows on trees 🙁

I really didn’t have the funds when I was raising my girls alone so they pretty much learned the value out of necessity. I hope my grandson learns also – but not by doing without. We will try to teach him by letting him earn his spending money.
