Dave Ramsey is know for his Financial Peace University Series and many ways to help adults become debt free and realize cash is king and he has several programs to help our children from 3 years of age all the way through college. Smart Money Smart Kids is the new book written by Dave Ramsey and his daughter, Rachel Cruze. The purpose of this book is to help parents raise money smart kids in a debt filled world. My husband and I got married at a very young age and we struggled financially for many years. Out of this struggle I became the money conscious, frugal person I am today. Smart Money Smart Kids starts with the basics of working, spending, saving, the all important giving and avoiding debt for life.
A few months back I reviewed the Junior’s Smart Saver Bank which comes with three “Piggy Banks”, one for spending, one for saving and one for giving. This savings set along with the new book help our children categorize the money they earn, no matter how much money they warn whether it be $5 or $100 a percentage goes into savings and it set aside for giving and then they have a portion left for spending. We also stress to our children that when you spend money, when it is gone it is gone and to make wise choices. My 8 year old son loves to go to that cheap toy aisle at Walmart, you know where they have all the little $5 trucks and motorcycles that fall apart within an hour after we get home. We have tried to stress to him that just because he has money does not mean it has to be spent, if he wants something that costs more it is ok to set this money aside and save up for the $25 toy that will last longer and be a better investment and he is slowly starting to come around and realize this is best.
