T-fal is a brand that has been around forever and is synonymous with all things non-stick thanks to their proven coatings. I did not know until recently that T-fal also offered products such as knives and kitchen gadgets so when I was offered the opportunity to try some I had to check them out.
The products I received from the Ingenio line are the pizza cutter and contour peeler pictured above. We love that the pizza cutter does not feature a metal blade, instead it is made from plastic that contains no BPA and no phtalate and does a respectable job at cutting pizza and is safe enough for the kids to use. The plastic blade is also removable which is great because the dishwasher never can get all the cheese and sauce that gets stuck in the gap where the cutter spins on our old one. I love that the peeler is contoured which makes it so much easier to peel, after all most things we peel are rounded so the contoured blade contacts a greater surface area and makes peeling so much faster and easier. The entire Ingenio line is dishwasher safe, highly resistance to stains and heat resistant up to 230°C.
The Zen line of knives are made from high density ceramic and each knife comes with its own protective sleeve. You will notice in the picture above the silicone ring makes each knife safer and also more hygenic because it prevents your knife from touching the work surface when at rest. My first impression of the Zen knives was they they are terrific. They cut through plastic packages of meat with ease and sliced chicken breast with very little effort, literally like cutting through butter. I also love that ceramic knives are dishwasher safe and ceramic is supposed to stay eternally sharp.
Now for the bad part of my experience. The first time I used the chef knife was to cut the chicken you see in the pic above. After I cut the chicken I handed the knife to my husband for him to hand wash and when he dried it he noticed that the knife no longer had a tip, it had broken off. I could not find it in the chicken so best we can assume is that it broke off in the sink when he was washing it. I also only used the paring knife one time, placed it in the dishwasher and when the kids unloaded it they noticed the tip was gone. Even with the tip gone these knives still function very well and have stayed sharp, I am just very disappointed that the tip breaks off so easily. If you purchase these knives I would be very careful when washing them and if you notice the tip breaks off like mine, return them to the store for refund or replacement.
