I recently came across a press release for Ted’s Montana Grill advertising that they were introducing some new menu items. I checked out their website and saw they had some great looking food and found a location in Downtown Nashville so I had to contact them to see if we could go in and give it a try. Ted’s Montana Grill first opened in Columbus, Ohio in 2002, founded by a couple of entrepreneurs who had a dream and a love for Big Sky Country and its tradition of hearty food and who also wanted to celebrate an American icon, the Bison.
We had reservations for 7pm on a Thursday night and were promptly seated when we arrived by Todd, the Manager/Proprietor. Todd explained a little bit about Ted’s Montana Grill and that they are known for their Bison and handed us off to Chad, our server for the evening. To say that Chad was an excellent server would be an understatement. When you visit a nice restaurant you expect the server to make recommendations, a lot of time it seems like they are just recommending the special of the day or what they have been told to push, but that was not the case with Chad. We could easily tell by Chad’s enthusiasm, knowledge of the food, recommended wine pairings, etc. that he not only knew the menu, but that he has also eaten from it many times. I apologize for the quality of the pictures from the inside of the restaurant. Each table has a beautiful sconce on the wall with a mirror behind it which makes for a great ambiance, but not so great for photography.
As we looked over the appetizer menu we saw some great options, Homemade Chips, Smoked Trout Dip, but since we were in the place known for Bison, we had to go for the Bison Nachos, what else? This appetizer starts with fresh tortilla chips and is topped with Ted’s famous Bison Chili and is topped with Pepperjack Cheese, Sour Cream and your choice of other fresh toppings such as Jalapenos and tomatoes.
We have this tradition where every couple of weeks we have a date night with a couple and we go to a different burger joint in the Nashville area and there are many. Since I think there is nothing quite like a good burger, I had to check out the offering of burgers from Ted’s Montana Grill. As you can see in the picture above (click it to open a larger view) they have 18 burgers on the menu, quite impressive. I had never had Bison before so I chose the Delicious Duo which comes with two burgers that are 3oz. each, a little bigger than what I would call a slider, one is Bison and one is Beef. When the burgers came out it was hard to tell which was Beef and which was Bison just by looking so they put an American flag in the Bison for easy identification. When I bit into the Bison burger I was amazed. Absolutely no gaminess at all, but instead it was the most flavorful, juicy burger, I loved the bun, the finely shredded lettuce gave it just the right crunch.
Ted’s Montana Grill’s selection of steaks is wonderful, they even offer the same cuts in Beef or Bison. My husband loves a good Ribeye and since we were in the house of the Bison, he had no choice. His Delmonico Bison Ribeye was ordered medium and came out cooked perfectly, as you can see it was very juicy and just running all over the plate when he cut into it. Chad had explained to us that Bison is a little bit leaner meat than Beef and that was definitely evident by the Ribeye. As you know a Ribeye is supposed to have quite a bit of marbling throughout, for me I prefer a New York Strip just because I do not like the extra fat, but the Delmonico Bison Ribeye had just enough marbling to add great flavor and to baste the steak in its own juices as it cooks. For side items I had the Fresh Cut Fries which were great and my husband had the Garlic Mashed Potatoes which he said paired very well with the Ribeye.
You just have to finish off an excellent meal like this with a good dessert and one of the new menu items that caught my eye was the Strawberry Shortcake. Chad did a great job explaining this dessert from the fresh-baked sweet drop biscuits that were just firm enough on the outside and fluffy on the inside, perfect for the Strawberries and Strawberry Sauce and the generous scoop of Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream. Unlike a soft cake, the sweet drop biscuit soaked up just the right amount of liquid without getting soggy like a cake tends to. You all know how big of a Chocoholic I am, so the Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookie and Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream were calling my name, look at the size of that cookie!
Our experience at Ted’s Montana Grill on West End in Nashville was by far the best dinner we have had in quite some time, I only wish we would have visited sooner. Find a location near you here and if you are in the Nashville area be sure to ask for Chad, the best server ever! Check out Ted’s Montana Grill on facebook, twitter, YouTube and Instagram. Here is a good tip, a good way to save money at restaurants is to search for coupons using a website like Mamma.com.

My family went there one year for Thanksgiving. I had the Bison Burger and it was to die for! I had never had a cut of meat that just melted in my mouth. It is definitely a place for meat lovers.
