Addiction
Just because it is socially acceptable doesn’t not make it an addiction. Most people who own smartphones don’t go anywhere without them and many even take them to the bathroom. A person’s phone always has to be in an arm’s reach just in case someone is trying to reach them or they need to look something up. You take out your phone to check your email and 40 minutes later you are still on your phone just scrolling and looking for things you haven’t seen yet. Does all of this sound familiar? Unfortunately, it is the current norm of today’s society. People are unable to experience life anymore because they are too glued to their phones. They can’t just be left alone with their thoughts but instead take out their phone and start scrolling. This behavior leads to an uninspired and unimaginative world that is teaching people to be less social in real life and only able to communicate through the internet.
Depression
It is not something that is caused by a phone or social media, but depression can be fueled by them. There are so many people in the world that are dealing with depression and having easy access to the internet and social media doesn’t help. Seeing the perfect lives of your friends on social media can make your feelings of depression act up. Clinical depression is a mental disease that should definitely not be ignored. People only show their best selves online. We sometimes forget that, when we are already feeling down. When you are feeling depressed, definitely don’t pick up your phone to start scrolling. Physical Health
Not only do smartphones make us live a more sedentary life, but they also have effects on our eyesight, fingers, hands, and elbows. If you are constantly staring at your phone screen, you will most likely begin to squint because the screen is so small and that can cause major strain on your eyes which will inevitably lead to vision problems in the future. Many people complain about numbness and pain in their hands from using smartphones, mostly in the ring and pinky fingers. Many people have also said their thumb cramps up. When, one’s elbow is bent for long periods of time it can cause cramping and pain in the hand and fingers as well. Since we rest our smartphones on our pinky finger, many people have reported that their pinkies have been looking a little bent-out-of-shape. Everyone’s pinkies may just be a little crooked from here on out.
What You Can Change
If you want to live a more meaningful life while enhancing your social skills, then put down your phone. On your next trip to the grocery store try to leave your phone at home. I know it will be difficult but hey, you may even find that your trip will be quicker and more productive. You can also set aside time during the day where you put your phone far away from you and don’t look at it. Don’t let your addiction to your phone control your physical or mental health. Remember, it’s just a phone.
