Receiving flowers as a gift is probably one of my favorite things. Knowing that someone thought of you and wanted to get you something beautiful is such a great feeling. The way they smell and the bright cheerfulness they bring to my home brings me so much joy. The thing that doesn’t bring me joy? Two weeks later, when my beautiful flowers are just sad and wilted and at the end of their life.
I’m always a little sad about having to throw that perfect bouquet out after just a few short weeks of having them in my house. Those small fertilizer packets that come with them help barely, and that sweet, thoughtful gift is just gone, as appreciated as it was.
But, what if those flowers lasted longer? What if they lasted a full year? That would be pretty amazing, and the good news is, now they can! If you’ve been on Instagram lately, you’ve seen these new everlasting roses that have been all over some celebrity’s pages, notably the Hadid sisters and the Kardashians. So, I decided to do some digging and find out everything I could about this fantastic concept.
There are quite a few companies like luxurious La Fleur De Luxe out there selling these roses arranged in a box. Here’s what I’ve learned about them and why I think they’re the next best thing to come out of the floral industry!
The Process
These roses are usually farmed in Ecuador, which has excellent soil for growing roses. They tend to be naturally living longer, which makes them the perfect pick for the preservation process. They’re picked at the height of their beauty, and the processing begins. Typically red roses are used for this process as they’re most commonly grown.
They’re then treated with a non-toxic bleach solution to strip them of their coloring. This allows the producers to have a blank canvas to work with. The roses are then dehydrated and processed using a mixture of oils and a wax formula similar to silica.
After this process has been completed, it’s time for the roses to sit in a bath of the chosen dye. Now, there is a wide array of available colors for this type of rose. Of course, you have your classic pinks and reds, but you can also get blues, purples, or even metallics. There truly is a color for every mood and occasion, making them a perfect gift no matter who you’re buying for.
How to Care for Them
The roses come in various arrangements, which, unless you’re buying a single-stemmed rose, must remain intact. The good news is there is a large variety of arrangements out there, including beautiful and classy acrylic boxes or more traditional arrangements if that’s your style.
Now, it is essential that these roses stay in a room with a moderate temperature, not too humid, warm, or sunlight-filled as that may cause the roses to fade prematurely. The optimal temperature for the roses to be stored at is 15 to 20 degrees Celsius or 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s also vital that they are not refrigerated, as that may hurt how long they last for. Also, they should be kept indoors at all times.
It’s crucial that you do not touch the roses, as the natural oils from your fingers may degrade the quality. If you must handle them, please do so carefully as, after all, they are real roses!
The Pros
Because they’re last for over a year, they make an excellent gift. You can see roses in your home every day. It’s even possible that with great care that they may last longer than the advertised year, sometimes also lasting for up to three years.
The wide color range means that whatever the occasion or mood, you can find a color to match. I do love a classic red rose, but having the option to match them to your décor or personal taste is absolutely in their favor.
They also do have a lovely natural rose scent, which can last for up to three weeks, which is longer than the roses might live on their own. After that, the scent may fade, but you’ll still be left with beautiful roses to look at! Also, because they’ve been preserved, they don’t attract pesky insects, keeping your home pristine and critter-free.
One thing I’ve noticed is because of their long lifespan, they’ve become especially popular for hotels and weddings. I can understand why, as they’re incredibly low maintenance.
The Cons
Now, I wouldn’t say there are many cons to these beautiful flower arrangements; however, I did notice one.
These arrangements can run reasonably costly, with a single rose costing upwards of $30 and full arrangements costing around $200. Now, although the cost may seem steeper than picking up a bouquet at the grocery store, it is essential to acknowledge the longevity and beauty of what you’re purchasing.
These aren’t your ordinary, garden variety carnations. These are beautiful, Ecuadorian roses, treated for longevity. The fact that these roses typically last a year and can even last up to three years means that you’re getting a great deal for a fresh, lovely centerpiece that can brighten up even the dreariest of homes.
So, while the upfront cost may seem a little steep when you factor in the lifespan of them, it works out to a pretty good deal.
Now, quite a few companies are selling everlasting roses on the market, and you may have to do some research to find out which ones are going to provide your ideal aesthetic, in a price range and color scheme that you love. One thing I can guarantee though is you’ll love seeing these vibrant blooms that stand up to the test of time, and I highly recommend you look into them for your next special birthday, holiday, or even if you want to treat yourself! You absolutely deserve it!
