The mission of Women’s Bean Project is to change women’s lives by providing stepping stones to self-sufficiency through social enterprise. Women’s Bean Project offers a transitional job training program for chronically unemployed and impoverished women that has been around since 1989. They provide jobs in gourmet food and handmade jewelry manufacturing. At the same time, they augment the skills they develop on the job by offering special programming and classes in interpersonal and life skills needed to move into career entry-level employment. By working in an active business, program participants learn the importance of reliability, accuracy, punctuality, attention to detail and attendance; while also addressing life skills – communication, budgeting, accountability, problem solving and goal setting. Their graduates become empowered to lead successful, self-sufficient and fulfilling lives, creating a brighter future – for themselves, their families, our communities and our economy.
When I think of Labor Day I think of gathering with friends and family and Chris cooking up some good stuff on the grill. Women’s Bean Project offers these handy little tins, one for Hot Salsa and one for BBQ. Salsa is a great appetizer to have at your party, easy to whip up and sit a big bowl of it alongside a bowl of chips and you are good to go. These little tins come with a recipe card inside with some recipes to try them out. Recommended recipes for the Hot Salsa blend include of course salsa and also a guacamole, plus recipes for tacos and fajitas, this is really a universal little can we have here. Now for the BBQ Spice Blend, think garlic, paprika, cayenne pepper, onion and a touch of sugar. Recipes for this blend include meatballs, shredded tacos and a dry rub and marinade. For the marinade just mix the blend with olive oil and rub on chicken, fish and more. If you are a ribs or brisket person this dry rub would be amazing on those, slow cook in the oven for a few hours and then finish on the grill for a treat that all of your guests will love.
Women’s Bean Project also has dessert covered with their Chocolate Brownie Mix. What I loved most about these brownies is they came out soft and chewy, but unfortunately they did not stay together very well when I removed them from the pan. The other issue I had with them was that they looked great when they came out of the oven, but after letting them sit to cool a bit before cutting they really did fall down quite a bit, did not stay a nice thick brownie.
If you are a coffee lover like our me then you will love the Friend’s Blend from Women’s Bean Project. We love whole bean coffee since it seems to be at its freshest. We grind just enough for what we need that day and it never lets us down. This blend is a medium roast with a hint of dark roast flavor. I love that the coffee is so smooth and Chris loves the darker notes since he is a dark roast fan.
