Supporting our local schools has always been something my family and I have actively participated in. Lets face it, the funds available to schools are just not enough. I like the fundraisers throughout the year but the downside to those is that they can get costly, especially when you have several children. Asking family and friends to buy this and buy that can get tiresome. You can see the expressions on their face as soon as you pull the flyer out. I know we’ve felt that way and I’m sure others have to. We want to help but there’s got to be an easier way to help our schools. This is why Box Tops for Education is our favorite way to earn money for our schools. I can buy things for my family at my local Walmart that I buy every week and at the same time support our schools without breaking the bank. In case you’re not familiar with this program I’ll give you a little background. Many General Mills products contain Box Tops for Education on them like the one below:
Each Box Top is worth $0.10 for your child’s school. There are over 80,000 k-8 schools that participate. You clip the Box Top from the package and send it with your child to their school. The school then turns them in and receives a check equal to the value of Box Tops collected. This way the schools get the much needed extra funds for things their budget doesn’t allow for. Box Tops for Education has contributed over $525 million to participating schools since the launch of the program in 1996.
Two years ago we left the public school system and chose to homeschool instead. One day per week we attend a local co-op for educating. If you’re not familiar with a co-op it’s several groups of families who come together and teach classes and educate each others children. We pay a per class fee that is set by the teacher. The only fee our co-op charges is an annual family fee. It’s a very reasonable fee but provides the extras like glue, pencils, scissors, etc. If there’s ever anything extra usually someone chips in to get it or parents make the purchase. This program offers our co-op another way to earn extra money with the Box Tops for Education loyalty program.
Even if you don’t have children in school you can help your local schools earn through this program. Our local schools have made collection boxes and set them up at our local grocery stores. Look for specially marked General Mills products and clip those Box Tops and help support your local schools.
