To check the comfort of a mattress, stay in one position for a few minutes without moving and see how it feels. If you can stay in that position comfortably for a few minutes, you’ve found a comfortable mattress.
Firmness means how soft or hard a mattress is on a scale of 1-10. To determine what firmness works best for you you’ll need to factor in your weight, size, and preferences.
If you’re a sleeper who lays on their side, you’ll want a soft to medium level firmness in the 3-6 out of 10 range. You’ll need a softer mattress that conforms to your body as you lay on your side.
Laying on your back you’ll want a firmness within the 4-7 range since if it’s too soft it’ll create pressure points on your back. If your bed doesn’t support you while you sleep, that could lead to back problems.
Do you lay on your stomach? You’ll want to be as flat as possible when you lay on your stomach. You’ll want a firmness within the 5-7 range to support sleeping on your stomach. Some stomach sleepers could need slightly out of this range such as firmness of 4 or 8.
Take your weight and height into effect as well when picking out a mattress as far as firmness. If you’re less than 150 lbs, you’ll want a medium firmness bed such as a 5-6 range. If you’re less than 150 lbs you can always go with a firmness of 4.
Average weight is considered 150-200 lbs, so you can go with the standard average which is 5-7 firmness. If you want a softer bed and sleep on your side, you can opt for a 3-5 range. Are you over 200 lbs? You’ll want to go with a firmer mattress.

Before picking out a mattress, it’s important to determine your budget and spend what you feel most comfortable with. You can spend $200 or $10,000, there’s definitely a variance with mattresses. It’s about choosing the right fit plus within your budget.
$0-$200- Just say no to this. It’s probably a used mattress online at this price.
$200-$400- These are great as guest room mattresses. These might come with a pillow-top and have a 1-year warranty. You can use this for every night but you won’t get much for comfort and support.
$400-600- These are a range for every night use or guest rooms but at a bare minimum. These are great for college students looking to save.
$600-1,000- This is the average range for every night use. This is the lowest price you can find memory foam mattresses as well.
$1,000-$1,500- You start getting into luxury mattresses at this price. The foam mattresses are thicker and you’ll start seeing big brand names for this price.
$1,500-$2,500- When you’re dreaming of the perfect mattress, you can find one with everything you’re looking for in this price range. Warranties on these mattresses tend to be longer than the other price ranges as well.
$2,500-$5,000- You won’t find anything much better at this price range that you can’t get at a lower range. Only go this route if you can’t find what you’re looking for in a lower range.
Best Time to Buy a Mattress
When you’re looking for sales on mattresses and not breaking the bank, there’re certain times of the year that are better than others.

- Memorial Day
- President’s Day
- Black Friday
