Although Pizza may be thought of as Italian Food it is just as American as a cheeseburger and has a long legacy engraved throughout cities all across America. This book, Pizza, A Slice of American History written by Liz Barrett is like a documentary for pizza, getting all the way down to the roots of pizza in America and will probably introduce you to some varieties you never knew existed. Containing 176 pages, with many pictures to make you drool, this book is ideal for the coffee table and will be a conversation piece when you have guests. We are big fans of New York Style Pizza with its paper thin crust and this book also covers other well known varieties such as Chicago and Detroit Style, Sicilian and Neopolitan, but how about Colorado Style Mountain Pie or Quad Cities Style Pizza? Yeah I had never heard of those either. Colorado Style Mountain Pie features a mountain of toppings and is listed on the menu in terms of weight not size like traditional pizza. Quad Cities Style Pizza dough has dark roasted brewers malt giving the crust a darker color and a nutty, sweet taste with a thin and spicy sauce and a lean pork sausage that is heavy on the fennel and other spices.
While Pizza, A Slice of American History is not a recipe book it does contain a recipe or two here and there for various pizza doughs and sauces and quite a bit of technique. We are a homeschooling family who loves to explore many topics through Unit Studies and as you probably guessed, Pizza is soon to be one of them with the help of this book. Grab a copy yourself for the coffee table as you have guests over this holiday season or it would be a great idea for that pizza lover in your family, we all have one, but most have many. Pizza, A Slice of American History be purchased from Amazon, QBookShop or your favorite local bookstore.
