Buying a new mattress can be quite a stressful experience. Mattresses can end up costing you a lot of money, and for that reason, it is important to not make the wrong choice. Buying a mattress which ends up not to your liking can be a nightmare. As recently as 15 years ago, you’d only really have two options when it would come to buying a new mattress. Either you would listen to recommendations from friends and/or family, or you would go to a showroom and talk to a salesman. Both options have their issues. While your friends and family will have your best interests at heart, that doesn’t mean that their opinion is going to be the same as yours, or the general public’s. Besides, such an opinion is that of one person, not that of thousands as you may see on customer reviews. And, while a salesman may appear to be giving you useful information, it is likely that they are trying to convince you to buy the most expensive item in your budget.
Customer reviews, however, tend not to be fraught with so many issues. Besides, who better is there to ask than those who actually own the product? With the spread of the internet, this is now an easily accessible option. However, there are some problems. For instance, an individual consumer may be extremely biased in his/her review. This, however, isn’t so much of an issue when there are hundreds or even thousands of reviews for a particular mattress. A more significant issue, however, would be the risk of companies manipulating data. Some brands may even pay customers in order to write reviews on their behalf. Here are a couple of tips on finding trustworthy reviews:
- Look for customer data that has been verified by a third party: Many review sections on manufacturers’ websites tend to be reviewed by a third party. This ensures that data is not tampered with and that you are reading exactly what those who have reviewed the product have written. Some websites, however, do not have this, making data much more likely to be manipulated. Actually going on third-party review websites is a good way to ensure this.
- Be sure to read more than one review: As previously said, some individual consumers will have biases. As a result, it is worth investing some time to ensure that you get a fuller picture. Review websites tend to have an overall rating, which is an average of the rating that consumers have given it – be sure to check that. Look for trends in the testimonials.
If you manage to follow the advice above, then you’re likely to find that reading reviews is one of the most important deciding factors in choosing to buy a new mattress.
